Chapter 24: Infatuated with Pu Huaiyan
The torrential rain poured down like the Milky Way collapsing. The whole world was so deathly quiet that it felt as though only the two of them remained, every other sound entirely swallowed by the deluge.
Pu Huaiyan’s burning breath cut through the icy curtain of rain, melting gently beside Shan Dai’s ear. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
Shan Dai heard him, yet felt dazed. What kind of dazedness was it? She couldn’t quite articulate it—only that she had never felt anything like this in her whole life. The heavy rain kept battering their umbrella as if it would breach it at any second, yet an all-encompassing sense of peace, calmness, and effortless ease enveloped her… Yes, effortless ease. At this moment, with Pu Huaiyan standing beside her, even if the sky were to fall, it felt utterly trivial.
Pu Huaiyan cupped her head and gently rubbed her hair, his soothing words slowly washing over her heart. Finally, holding her stabilized self tightly, he moved toward the car. He lifted her into the passenger seat before crossing through the wind and rain around the front of the hood to enter the driver’s side.
Sui Yuan climbed into the back seat to hold his wife, showering her with warm concern that instantly filled the vehicle’s cabin.
Shan Dai took a tissue box passed to them by CiCi from the back and handed a clump of tissues to Pu Huaiyan.
He took them and wiped away the water blurring his eyes before leaning back against the seat, dazed. His eyes felt raw and sore from the rainwater.
“Thank you, Sister-in-law! Thank you so much for going down to grab CiCi,” Sui Yuan’s voice floated over from the back, dripping with gratitude. “I’m truly so grateful. I’ll treat you to a meal another day. Sorry to trouble you two today.”
Shan Dai slowly turned her head back, offered a faint smile, and shook her head before turning back to sit properly.
Pu Huaiyan opened his eyes, which felt slightly less sore now. Propping himself up, he reached over to Shan Dai’s side, pulled her seatbelt, and buckled it in.
Even in a moment like this, he didn’t forget that her injured hand shouldn’t pull the seatbelt, always terrified she might cut it again.
Shan Dai raised her head, and for a fleeting instant, their eyes met inside the warm, orange-lit cabin.
“Are you cold?” His thin lips moved slightly, his voice soft as a pillow-side whisper.
Shan Dai shook her head. Her heart ached more for him, drenched to the skin as he was. She pulled out a few tissues and pressed them against his shirt collar. It was soaking wet, drops of water trickling down his moving throat.
Pu Huaiyan pressed down on the tissues and her half-covered hand. After lingering fondly for a second, he let go of her and unbuttoned the top two buttons of his collar for ventilation.
“Why did you come down?” His voice was a bit raspy, as if suppressing something.
“I don’t know. President Pu was out in the rain, and I couldn’t just sit still.”
He chuckled softly, looked up at the car roof, and slowly sat up straight. Then, he pulled out his phone from his pocket, wiped the water off the screen, and called other executives at the company, instructing them to go to the hospital to handle the aftermath, leaving the scene here to the driver.
When he finished, he tossed the phone aside and started the car.
Only after driving for a little while did he bother pulling his own seatbelt on.
After dropping CiCi and her husband off at their hotel, the car turned toward the Oriental Rose. About thirty minutes late, the vehicle finally resumed its original route.
Pu Huaiyan didn’t say a word until the car pulled into the brightly lit underground garage of the hotel.
“Go take a hot shower so you don’t catch a cold.” He leaned over to unbuckle her seatbelt, then pulled a tissue to dab her cheek, which was still damp. “If you feel unwell in the middle of the night, tell me.”
Shan Dai shook her head. “I’m fine, it’s summer.”
Pu Huaiyan reached into the back seat to fetch the things she had bought tonight. Just as he was about to get out, Shan Dai’s gaze lingered on the time display in the cabin.
At this exact moment, it was 01:20 AM.
It was 1:20 AM on June 9, 2012.
“Happy birthday,” she murmured.
Pu Huaiyan turned back around.
“It’s your birthday.” Shan Dai tilted her head and smiled, pointing at the clock, and repeated, “Happy birthday.”
The man’s thin lips pressed into a faint smile. Moving softly, he spoke to her in a gentle whisper: “Thank you. Aren’t you tired? You actually remembered.”
“I don’t particularly hate this rain,” she said, gazing at the clock. Her slender, pale fingertip lightly stroked the display, watching it jump from 20 to 21 minutes. “Rain is the only thing in this world that can make time turn back. I really like rain.”
Pu Huaiyan looked at her, puzzled.
Shan Dai asked him, “Where were you ten years ago today, President Pu?”
“Toronto.” He didn’t understand her point, but answered directly.
Shan Dai smiled softly. “Water circulates. The rain that drenched us today might very well have drenched you ten years ago in Toronto. If we count it like that, doesn’t it mean I’ve met the Pu Huaiyan from ten years ago? Back then, you were eighteen.”
In an instant, the light in Pu Huaiyan’s eyes froze. An intense surge of electric shock swept through every limb and bone. His heart trembled violently, and it felt as though something in his soul vibrated wildly, stirring him to the core.
Shan Dai curved her eyes, quietly adding, “To the Pu Huaiyan from ten years ago, happy birthday, too.”
He lowered his head and took several deep breaths. In the midst of her gentle smile, a trace of a smile finally curved his thin lips.
“Thank you.”
Her smile deepened.
As usual, he got off the car and walked around the front to help her out and accompany her upstairs.
Even in the hallway, terrifying rumbles of thunder could be heard, rolling past their ears stroke by stroke.
Pu Huaiyan took Shan Dai’s room card, stepped forward to swipe open the door for her, inserted it into the power slot, and turned on the lights.
Because there was a window in the room, the thunder sounded even louder than in the hallway. Pu Huaiyan wrapped a gentle arm around Shan Dai’s shoulder to steady her inside. “Don’t turn off the lights tonight, then you won’t be scared.”
Shan Dai felt his soaking clothes and spoke up: “Um, why don’t you stay overnight instead of going back? Get a room here. Driving in a full suit of wet clothes must be so uncomfortable.”
“I’ll be there in a bit, it’s fine. Get some rest early.”
“Where do you live?”
Pu Huaiyan met the young girl’s concerned gaze, hesitating. “Just in the city center.”
“Really?”
The moment he showed a tiny beat of hesitation, Shan Dai didn’t believe him. “Are we eating in the city center tomorrow?”
“…” Pu Huaiyan let out a helpless laugh. Indeed, he couldn’t play along—where in the city center was he going to find a house tomorrow to bring her over for his birthday?
Ms. Shan was very sharp. He could only confess honestly: “I live in the outskirts of Beijing.”
Sure enough, her eyes flickered. “The outskirts? Then where did you come from when you went to Qishan Hutong just now? That hutong is in the city center, not remote at all.”
Pu Huaiyan: “I was at the company just now.”
“…” Shan Dai plainly felt a knot of hemp rope tightening around her heart. It was suffocating. On a Friday night, after drinking at a wedding, he had braved heavy rain overnight to return from another city, and then even went to the company to work overtime. He worked so hard.
Frowning her small brows, she asked, “Then how long does it take to drive from here to the outskirts of Beijing?”
“About an hour or so.”
An hour normally? Then in weather like this, wouldn’t it take at least an hour and a half baseline? Good heavens. Shan Dai was completely dizzy. “How about… you don’t leave, okay?” Her voice almost carried a tone of pleading. She was so worried his car would stall halfway and he’d have to call for rescue again, catching a cold in the process.
Pu Huaiyan glanced at his wristwatch. “If I set off now, I can get home before three.”
“…”
His words were even scarier than the thunder and lightning. Shan Dai couldn’t accept it at all and immediately pressed her hand onto his arm. “It’s too late, and it’s so dangerous with constant thunder and rainstorms. Let’s go to the front desk and get a room, alright? It’s Saturday tomorrow anyway. You can sleep in until noon before going to the company to work overtime. Do you have that much work?”
“Maybe the hotel is fully booked,” he stated a realistic possibility. “It’s fine, I’ll just head back.”
“Let me call and ask.” Shan Dai immediately rushed over to pick up the landline phone on the nightstand and pressed the front desk button.
After two seconds, it connected. “Hello, this is the Oriental Rose Hotel.”
Shan Dai: “Hello, do you have any rooms available?”
Front Desk: “We still have one Business Suite and one small Standard Room.”
“Great, please hold the Business Suite for me, thank you.”
Shan Dai put down the phone, turned around, and said cheerfully to Pu Huaiyan, “There are rooms! Did you bring your ID card?”
“My passport.”
“Oh, right.” She had forgotten he held American citizenship. Saying that, she pulled him toward the door to head out.
“I can go down by myself,” Pu Huaiyan said. “My passport is in the car, I don’t have it on me. Go take a shower and rest.”
“Together. I’m worried you’ll just drive off as soon as you get downstairs.”
“…” The man let out a low chuckle.
The two entered the elevator. Pu Huaiyan, in a pleasant mood, stood leisurely on one side while peeking at the woman beside him.
She stood one step ahead of him, her slender back strikingly graceful. Her dark hair reached her waist, and she was wearing a smoky pink dress tonight. Her posture as she wrapped her arms around herself looked exceptionally relaxed and elegant, even though both of them were almost drenched to the skin.
Yet, it didn’t feel pitiful or bedraggled at all.
It was a night as gentle as a spring breeze. Just as she had said, she didn’t hate the rain because it was something that could turn back time.
Perhaps today’s rain would drench both of them again ten years from now.
“Are you tired? Playing until so late, is there anything fun in Beijing?” he asked, seemingly offhandedly.
Shan Dai turned her head back. “Secretary Shen and I went out for dinner, then went shopping, and after that we went to the pub. Actually, the only real fun place was the pub.”
Pu Huaiyan acted as if he didn’t know she had bought things for himself and kindly reminded her: “You’re going home soon. Did you buy gifts for your friends? If there are too many things, express deliver them back. Don’t carry too much yourself, both your hands and feet aren’t fully agile right now.”
“Oh, no…” Shan Dai said somewhat unnaturally, “I didn’t buy them for my friends.”
“You bought them for yourself?”
“It’s… a birthday gift for President Pu.”
The elevator reached B1.
The man didn’t move, a ripple rising in his voice. “For me?”
“Mm.” She quietly took the lead to walk out first.
Pu Huaiyan followed, putting on an act of not caring about the gift. “Silly girl, why buy me a gift? It’s unnecessary.”
“Of course you need a gift for your birthday.”
“You don’t have much money to begin with.”
“I do, I have money. I was too embarrassed to tell Secretary Shen that President Pu had given me the gift money in advance.”
Behind her back, the corners of the man’s mouth curled up high. “That was given to you for yourself. Don’t go embezzling public funds.”
“…” Shan Dai turned back, stomping her foot in a rare display of coquettish anger. “I’m not embezzling! If I don’t buy a house, I can still support President Pu for a few days. You don’t eat much, and your daily expenses are practically zero—you’re very easy to maintain!”
“…”
He laughed for quite a while, so much so that Shan Dai’s face flushed red.
Pu Huaiyan’s car was parked not far from the elevator. He quickly opened the door and retrieved a blue-covered passport.
Shan Dai took half a glance at it. “That’s a Canadian passport.”
“Mm. I hold dual citizenship.”
She paused, but wasn’t too surprised—he was born in Toronto after all. “Then what about Secretary Shen?”
“A pure Canadian national. When we argue, she often says she’s not from the same country as me and that I have no right to speak to her.”
“…” She covered her mouth and burst out laughing. “She really is very adorable.”
Pu Huaiyan didn’t deny her words. He knew that little devil was willing to help him chase a wife precisely because she liked Shan Dai herself. And why did she like Shan Dai? Because Shan Dai was always as gentle as water to her. The kid had never met someone with such a temperament before, so her heart was utterly charmed.
Shan Dai: “By the way, Secretary Shen said you don’t pay her a salary. Why is that?”
“No salary?” The man let out a scoffing laugh. “She looked down on the 5,000 RMB monthly pay for interns in the Yanxin Times Secretary Office, calling it barely enough to fill the gaps between her teeth. She said for the sake of family ties, she’d work for me for free, as long as I reimbursed her living expenses. So I gave her a supplementary card, and she spent six million RMB of mine in a single month.”
“…” Shan Dai froze for a moment, and finally broke out into a laugh. “Sorry.”
The two returned to the elevator together, rode up to the first floor, and walked to the front desk together after stepping out.
At this time of night, almost the whole world was sleeping. A male and female staff member at the front desk were staring blankly in silence.
Shan Dai took the blue passport and handed it over. “A Business Suite, please, thank you.”
Soon, the staff member handed back the passport and room card, reminding them of the room number: “It’s Room 10 on the 12th floor.”
It was on the same floor. Shan Dai instinctively felt a bit happy; it gave her a slight sense of security.
She was in Room 06, and his room was further down the hall, but not far either—separated by just one room, essentially diagonally opposite.
Shan Dai accompanied Pu Huaiyan to his room and took a look before the man walked her back to hers.
Before closing the door, he rested his hand on the doorframe and said to her, “If anything happens tonight, or if you get scared, just come find me directly. Doesn’t matter what time it is, remember that.”
“Mm, okay, thank you, President Pu.” She smiled. “Rest early.”
The man nodded, took hold of her doorknob, and closed the door for her himself.
Shan Dai grabbed her clothes and went to take a shower.
The sound of thunder remained relentless. Shan Dai didn’t dare stay long in the bathroom, taking a quick shower before stepping out, bringing the hair dryer outside to dry her hair.
Half an hour passed. Her hair was dry, and a pattering sound began echoing by her ears.
Shan Dai leaned against the headboard, listening while wondering where the sound was coming from.
After a moment, she got up to check the bathroom. The faucets inside were all turned off tightly; no water was dripping. She stepped out and walked toward the window again.
When she was still a meter away from the window, her foot stepped right into a puddle of water.
Shan Dai slammed the brakes on her steps just in time, nearly slipping and falling again. Gasping slightly, she quickly looked down—a pool of water lay on the floor.
She immediately rushed to pull open the curtains. Sure enough, the spot that had leaked yesterday was leaking again right now. Why hadn’t the hotel handled it after two days? What was going on?
Shan Dai checked if the window was tightly shut. Checking back and forth, it was shut tightly, yet rainwater kept pouring in from outside right before her eyes.
Shan Dai immediately looked back at her bedside. Sure enough, on the side near the window, the entire carpet around the bed leg was already soaking wet.
She circled around to the other side of the bed, bent down to look, and felt that the carpet under the bed already had a damp feel to it.
What should she do? It was so late.
Just bear with it for one night? Change hotels tomorrow? Coincidentally, Pu Huaiyan was here, so she wouldn’t even need to call a taxi.
She carefully made her way back onto the bed.
Perhaps too many things had happened tonight; even though she felt quite tired, she didn’t fall asleep immediately after lying down for half an hour.
Holding her phone, she browsed for a bit and inexplicably opened the Google search engine, typing in—Yanxin Times.
To her surprise, a Wikipedia-like page popped up—The Pu Clan Worldwide Family, also known as the Yanxin Family.
The lengthy family history spanned over a hundred pages. Domestic and overseas, their global family footprints over the past century were a hundred times more heavy and deep than the few words Shen Jiani had mentioned.
Shan Dai spent a whole hour reading before exiting the page.
Dazed and groggy, she went to Moments and gave Ziming a like. Seeing that she wasn’t asleep yet, Ziming called her directly.
After discussing work with her for a bit, Ziming finally asked when she planned to return so she could pick her up at the airport, mentioning that it had been raining continuously in Lan City recently due to a typhoon.
Shan Dai: “In a couple of days. Thanks for holding down the fort for two more days. Tomorrow is Pu Huaiyan’s birthday, and he invited me to his house to celebrate.”
“Making progress this fast? You’re going to his house? Will you be able to come back after going there?”
“…” Shan Dai explained, “There are other people present. Don’t talk nonsense.”
Ziming laughed. “You said yesterday that President Pu likes you. What’s the deal? Spill the tea.”
Shan Dai lay completely relaxed under the covers, closed her eyes, and let out a deep sigh. “There are a lot of details.” She recounted the incident where Pu Huaiyan needed her to remind him to eat.
“Hiss…” Ziming gasped.
Shan Dai: “Do you think this situation is normal? I’m a married woman, and someone in his position has such high EQ. In order to let me know that Lu Zhixing cheated, he deliberately set up a dinner party to subtly break the news to me without letting Lu Zhixing know the entire time. Up until now, the divorce matters are almost set in stone, and I’ve met him so many times, yet Lu Zhixing still has no idea that this whole thing was orchestrated by his boss.”
“With high EQ like Pu Huaiyan’s, would he lack boundaries with a married woman like this? And the wife of his subordinate, no less. To be honest, whether in terms of family background or marital status, we are not in the same league. For him to care for and look after me like this defies common logic—it even defies morality.”
“Gosh, no no no! He definitely likes you,” Ziming said with absolute certainty.
“Also, he gave me a priceless birthday gift earlier,” Shan Dai explained how that gift had gone through twists and turns before finally reaching her hands. “I even suspect now that the diamond set might have been meant for me from the very beginning. Otherwise, how could it be such a coincidence that he just happened to have a relative celebrating a birthday?”
“Your guess is spot on!!! President Pu did that completely on purpose!!!” Ziming was beside herself with excitement. Originally, she wanted Shan Dai to flirt with Pu Huaiyan after her divorce, but now he actually liked her first! This was way too thrilling!
Shan Dai: “And the more I think about it, the more I feel like he and his secretary—who is actually his younger cousin—are in cahoots. Pu Huaiyan was already upset because I didn’t reach out to him on my business trip, so he had Secretary Shen lie to me that his hand injury had worsened. Then, right after I got hurt the day before yesterday, Secretary Shen said one second she’d accompany me to the hospital, and the next second her flight was delayed, leaving no choice but to call Pu Huaiyan over.”
Ziming: “Impressive, impressive! Flawless!”
Shan Dai: “Then last night, Secretary Shen originally said she’d find a friend to accompany me to the business dinner, but in the end, it was still Pu Huaiyan who came. A guy who usually works overtime to the point of almost staying up all night suddenly said he had no dinner engagements yesterday and just happened to drop by for a meal.”
“!!! Oh my gosh, oh my gosh! President Pu is putting on a whole acting performance every single day for you! He’s putting in so much effort!”
“And then tonight, as soon as he heard that Secretary Shen and I hadn’t returned home past eleven, he went to pick me up. And now…” She explained again how the two of them ended up in the same hotel after getting caught in the rain.
“Tsk tsk tsk! He’s simply so head-over-heels in love with you that he can’t help himself! At its core, he just wanted to stay in the same hotel as you, it had nothing to do with whether it rained or not!”
Shan Dai let out a deep breath.
Ziming: “What’s wrong? Do you feel troubled? You don’t want to date for now?”
Shan Dai: “I don’t know how to put it.”
Ziming: “Don’t worry about whether he did it on purpose or by coincidence. Either way, a man going through such painstaking schemes to pursue you shows he truly cares! It’s way better than that dog Lu Zhixing scheming to hide his affair from you.”
“…”
“If you don’t find him repulsive, you must grab hold of this opportunity, okay? Someone like Pu Huaiyan isn’t an ordinary person. I feel like he can walk sideways in Beijing1. Oh my god, to be able to be with a figure like that, and he’s dying to give you the best of everything in the world—it’s simply insane…”
“I’m not even considered single yet,” Shan Dai reminded her, caught between laughter and tears.
“…” Uh, Ziming gritted her teeth. “Fuck, I really should have just run over Lu Zhixing with my car! If that dog died, it’d end all troubles once and for all—if you can’t get a divorce, becoming a widow works for a second marriage too.”
Shan Dai murmured: “Stop talking about that, Mingming. He already agreed; we’ll get divorced as soon as I get back.”
“Fine, fine, fine, let’s not mention that dog. So your business partnership is settled too. Get some early sleep, and then dream about our dear President Pu in your sleep—that shouldn’t count as cheating, right?”
Shan Dai laughed softly. “Are you in a rush to sleep? If not, there’s something else I want to talk to you about.”
“What else is there to chat about? Go ahead.”
“Pu Huaiyan asked me if we want to expand our business to Beijing.”
“Expand? A branch company?”
“Yes.”
“The dream is great, but…”
“We don’t have the money, right?”
“It’s not that we don’t have money; we still have a bit of reserve funds. The main issue is, what if we lose money? Then all our hard work over the past year in Lan City will go down the drain, and we’ll be back to square one starting a business all over again.” Ziming sighed. “Actually, Bentley Bro asked me before if I had considered going to Beijing in the future.”
“Huh?”
“Because he’s only here on a business assignment for a year. He’s a Beijing native and will leave eventually.”
“Then which month is he on right now?”
“Month ten.”
It was Shan Dai’s turn to gasp. “He’s leaving soon! Then what about the two of you…”
Ziming sounded very relaxed: “It’s fine, we aren’t even together yet. I’m not going to look for trouble where there is none; we’re nowhere near that stage yet. Let’s talk about your thing first.”
Shan Dai repeated Pu Huaiyan’s words to her word for word.
After listening to the end, Ziming’s very first sentence was, “He’s using whatever means necessary to chase you, Dai Dai!” Her second sentence: “But it’s fine, go! You should go! Sacrificing one of you to expand our company is totally worth it!”
“…” Shan Dai covered her face with a smile. “Be serious.”
Ziming: “Actually, what he said makes sense. We’ve known for a long time that there are more opportunities in Beijing. If you have to make business trips here every single time in the future, it really is a waste of manpower and money. It’s not like nobody else can go, but if we have a branch company there, development will definitely be faster. It’s not just about the minor issue of you having trouble going on business trips.”
“Are there any downsides?”
“The main fear is that you won’t get used to life in Beijing. Having lived in Jiangnan since childhood, the climate and environment in the north and south are completely different. When Bentley Bro asked me this question, I said it’s scorching hot in summer and freezing cold in winter, so I never considered going to Beijing. He just laughed and said it wasn’t that bad.”
“Mm.”
“The most important issue is, if you accept Pu Huaiyan’s favors, can you not be with him? Dai Dai, taking gifts from others ties your hands. I don’t want you to be put in such a passive position.”
That was true. Pu Huaiyan said she just had to come, and he would handle everything else.
…But, he needed emotional reciprocity.
Ziming: “If we really want to execute this, we do it on our own. We barely have enough funds, but that brings us right back to the first question I mentioned—what do we do if it fails?”
Shan Dai rubbed the space between her eyebrows, also beginning to hesitate. “Yeah, one shouldn’t be too greedy. Pu Huaiyan’s advice came from his perspective as a big boss with a powerful financial backing to guarantee him. We can’t afford to lose.”
Ziming: “Exactly. Wait until you get back, and we’ll research it properly face-to-face. Risk and reward coexist anyway. Sometimes, the more you hesitate, the more likely you are to fail—wealth favors the bold. For now, get some rest early. You had a exhausting day today and got caught in the rain. If you wake up tomorrow morning with a headache, take some medicine so you can look gorgeous while spending a night with President Pu.”
“…” Shan Dai clarified seriously once more, “His friends are going to be there. It’s not a candlelit dinner.”
Ziming giggled. “Well, once there’s a first time, there’ll be a second time. Next time, President Pu will definitely invite you to a candlelit dinner all by himself!”
“…”
Shan Dai’s silence made Ziming reluctant to hang up. “Dai Dai, honestly speaking, what are your thoughts about after the divorce? Pu Huaiyan has gone through such deliberate schemes to get close to you—do you find it repulsive?”
Shan Dai: “Like you said, he’s doing it to pursue me, not to hurt me.”
Ziming: “Right, right, right!”
Shan Dai: “In fact, no one would dislike Pu Huaiyan. He is perfect.”
“Oh my gosh, you… what do you mean by that, babe?”
Shan Dai explained the interlude on the road tonight, and when she got to the end, she added: “Under those circumstances, it was completely normal for him to hold me. I understand, and I don’t resist or feel repelled by it. In fact…”
“In fact, what?”
“In fact, for a fleeting moment, I… really wanted to come to Beijing to expand our business.”
Ziming’s gasp floated over alongside the sound of thunder in Beijing. “You like Pu Huaiyan!”
Shan Dai said in distress: “I don’t know. It’s just… unlike before when I was with Lu Zhixing, where I was so sure I liked him. I’m so confused. It was just that single moment—with rain pouring down all over the sky and thunder roaring everywhere, as he held me, I instantly… instantly felt at ease. I had this thought that even if we stood in the rain until daybreak, it didn’t matter. And I… really wanted to come to Beijing to expand our business.”
“Because here, I can see him every day. He always finds various excuses to be good to me, and with him around, it feels like there’s nothing to be afraid of. Mingming, it’s that feeling of reluctance—reluctant to leave Beijing, reluctant to part from him, reluctant to lose the safe haven he provides.”
She let out a bitter smile. “Maybe this isn’t love either. It’s just that I’ve been through too many storms recently, and he has offered too much shelter, so I just want to hide under his wings.”
“Mm mm mm, I get it, I get it! This year, he is your redemption.”
Shan Dai sighed: “So Mingming, I’m thinking right now… Should I run far away, stay far away from Pu Huaiyan so I can clear my head and not sink into this, or should I really come to Beijing to expand our business?”
“What’s so bad about sinking into it? Even if you really fall in love with him, isn’t that great?”
“I’ve been married before.”
“He doesn’t care at all! Pu Huaiyan is the single man in the whole wide world who cares the least about his woman having had a previous marriage! He’s so awesome that he even fell for you before you even got divorced! As long as he likes you, there’s no such thing as being unworthy.”
“His family’s status is something I couldn’t bridge even if I lived ten more lives.”
“My goodness, is it really that insane?”
“Mm. Hidden giant monoliths in North America, top-tier nobility domestically. Between him and me, it’s like heaven and earth.”
“Oh boy… I watched his interview. Coming back felt like a sudden impulse under orders in a time of crisis. You should ask this big boss first if he’s planning to return to North America, so he doesn’t end up like Bentley Bro.”
“…”
